Wondrous Window Cleaner
Well, springtime is upon us, and with the emergence of the fragrant flowers come also the emergence of insects! Today I heard from our sun porch, "Mom!! There's a wasp in here!" I investigated and found, not an ordinary wasp, but a hornet crawling up one of our glass windows! Now, if you're like me, getting anywhere close to those things with a shoe or any other bee-squashing device is a precarious and dreaded scenario! So, I calmly walked back into the kitchen and armed myself instead with a common household liquid -- glass cleaner! Sound crazy? Read on!
A number of years ago, I asked a friend who works for the utility company and often climbs telephone poles, what they do if they encounter a bees nest at the top of a pole! Supposing him to have some secret bee-obliterating device or spray, he smiled and simply said that he hooks a spray bottle of ordinary ammonia-based glass cleaner to his belt! What? Windex? That's it? Well, apparently, that's enough! He explained that a squirt of glass cleaner gums up the bees' wings, rendering them unable to fly. They plummet to the ground! This is also, according to him, a great way to kill flies and bees that find their way into your home!
I tried it, and it WORKS! A bee or fly squirted with glass cleaner will be able to crawl, but not fly, at least not fully! So the next time you see a bee or fly crawling up a window, or buzzing around your light fixture, give them a squirt of glass cleaner, and when they fall to the window sill or floor -- whack the heck out of them! It's way easier to kill an insect that's incapacitated! A reminder to me that I need to remain alert and vigilant spiritually at all times lest the "Windex" of the world render my faith weak, making me easy pray to the enemy! ;)
